History
Santar is one of the oldest settlements in the region, with documentary references predating the founding of Portugal itself. Its origins are lost in time, as is the case with many historic lands, and local tradition still preserves the legend that the name came from the place where a king and his army rested after a battle. More than legends, Santar stands out for its architectural heritage, demographic balance, and economic dynamics that have marked its development within the municipality of Nelas.
The Region
Fidalgas de Santar is located in the heart of Santar, within the Dão Demarcated Region, one of Portugal's oldest and most prestigious wine regions, officially established in 1908. This area of Beira Alta is distinguished by its rugged terrain, around 20,000 hectares of vineyards, and a terroir marked by granite soils in the north and schist soils in the south.
Dão was a pioneer in regulating wine production in Portugal and later joined the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) system, reinforcing the identity and quality of its wines. Protected by several mountain ranges—Estrela, Caramulo, Lousã, Buçaco, Nave, and Açor—the region benefits from a unique climate: hot, dry summers and cold, rainy winters, ideal conditions for producing elegant, balanced wines with a distinctive aroma.
